- Acne is one of the most common inflammatory diseases among the global population, affecting teenagers as well as adults. It can be mild, moderate, or severe, and is often temporary. However, in some patients, it can be chronic. Regardless of its severity and duration, acne can have physical consequences, such as scarring, but also psychological consequences, such as low self-esteem and social withdrawal. In addition to environmental factors, a genetic component has been identified as a cause of the condition. This aspect could lead to the development of a new treatment approach in the future. This thesis aims to determine whether the pharmacogenetics of patients should be considered when prescribing acne treatments recommended in Belgium. Pharmacogenetics seek to understand how genetic variability influences the results of drug treatment. Analysis of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics suggests that it could be useful in predicting the efficacy of oral treatments such as azithromycin, isotretinoin, and oral contraceptives. However, interindividual variation has little impact on orally administered doxycycline. Topical treatments, whether antibiotic or non-antibiotic, have no place in pharmacogenetic studies because their systemic absorption is generally low. No studies have yet been conducted to investigate the impact of this discipline on the efficacy of oral treatments. Further studies in this area, as well as in the context of therapeutic targets, are still needed.
