- Human beings, like all living beings, derive the elements necessary for their growth and development from environmental resources. It is therefore logical, when there is a deficiency, to look for the impact on the body. In recent years, attention has been drawn to vitamin D. This steroid derivative, which is not actually a vitamin but an hormone, acts in an autocrine, paracrine and endocrine manner, via its binding to its nuclear receptor and through non-genomic pathways. Vitamin D develops a much wider spectrum of effects than previously expected. Numerous observational studies have highlighted potential links between vitamin D deficiency and cancer in particular. This master thesis summarizes the recent relevant information to understand the new role of vitamin D.
