Abstract

Database world is entangled in debates around SQL databases: defenders of the relational model call for getting back to relational theory, opponents go as far as calling for departing from relational theory and propose different ideas and products. However, a certain amount of critics towards SQL actually lie at the heart of the type system, which deserves to ponder again. The thesis will first review opinions from both relational advocates and supporters from NoSQL world. Then it will focus on discussing the potential of several richer data types in relational database system. Finally, it will reach a conclusion about the importance of a richer type system, and make a mention of the directions of future work.
