- Breast cancer is the first cancer in terms of frequency in women. In fact, the Cancer Foundation estimates that one in nine women will be affected by this disease during her lifetime. Many treatments exist depending on the type of cancer and the patient's preferences. When chemotherapy is selected, anthracyclines and taxanes are recommended as the first line. Doxorubicin is a tumor antibiotic from the anthracycline class that is commonly used in this disease. However, its use is limited by the cardiotoxicity it causes as well as the systemic adverse effects and resistance that appear. A different formulation based on pegylated liposomes has been developed to avoid these limitations. The aim of this thesis will be to compare conventional doxorubicin with its pegylated liposomal form. The comparison will take into account the efficacy, the toxicity, the administration scheme and the pharmacokinetics. It will also evaluate the pharmaco-economic impact as well as the resistance of the cancer cells against the two formulations. The aim will be to see if the nanomedicine can have therapeutic benefits or can improve patient compliance for metastatic breast cancer.
