- Abstract
- Uniquely adapted to queer the contemporary world, interactive comics are a genre in constant mutation (Molina Fernandez, 2022: 3). After a critical, theoretical, and historical overview of the genre (Chapter 1), this dissertation adopts a plurality of frameworks to analyse the three types of dialogues present in Still Heroes, a 2022 interactive comic published by Exaheva. We argue Still Heroes builds on these dialogues to construct a model of robustness mediated by the digital medium and its affordances. The readerly dialogue relies on the dual estrangement of linguistic, narrative and material agency from the reader and the protagonist (Chapter 2). The literary dialogue challenges American comics to emphasize the role of community and affect in robust, individual (re)construction (Chapter 3). Finally, the dialogue with militant and digital countercultures establishes a space and temporality where non-normative perspectives and experiences can thrive (Chapter 4). Our analysis underlines how digital and technological elements contribute to Still Heroes’ robustness, provided they emerge from a process of reflexive mediation.
