- Abstract
At the beginning of the 18th century, within a Kongo kingdom fragmented by dynastic conflicts and the growing influence of European partners, the prophetess Kimpa Vita gave birth to the Antonianist movement. The latter proclaimed herself to be the incarnation of Saint Anthony of Padua and sought to reconcile the kingdom's divisions. She then proposed a reinterpretation of the Christian message more in line with the Bakongo tradition. This study aims to examine the historical, religious, and political conditions of the emergence of this syncretism. This is in order to understand its significance within the long syncretic tradition of this region of Central Africa. Through a cross-reading of missionary sources and contemporary historiographical works, we will examine the processes of religious acculturation in the context of cultural confrontation.
