- Abstract
- Photography appears to be a means of revitalising contemporary literature. Indeed, it adds a new dimension to the text and enables readers to establish a new relationship with it. In Hélène Gestern’s novel Eux sur la photo, through a series of letters and the discovery of photographs, the two protagonists attempt to understand the bond that united their parents. In Le nom sur le mur, Hervé Le Tellier seeks to understand who André Chaix was – a former member of the Resistance during the Second World War – whose name he found engraved on a wall, along with photographs and objects that had belonged to him. In Le Bel Obscur, Caroline Lamarche wonders about one of her ancestors who has been erased from the family’s memory. Thanks to the discovery of a photograph, she attempts to piece together his story and to understand the reasons behind this erasure. Finally, in the chapter ‘Le baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville’ in Martine Ravache’s novel Regards paranoïaques, the author seeks to learn more about the legal proceedings surrounding Robert Doisneau’s famous photograph ‘Le baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville’. These four novels allow us to highlight different ways in which the investigation into photography features in literature.
