Abstract

Charlie Hebdo, Paris, Brussels, Orlando, Nice, Berlin. Within two years, terrorism has taken the lives of more than 280 European citizens away and injured over 1100. Although terrorism has always existed, the number of attacks and victims has experienced an accelerated rise since we entered the 21st century. This dissertation, entitled “An analysis of two American and two French newspapers on terrorist threats and their impact on the 2016 presidential elections in the United States”, was written with the objective of shedding light on the relationship between the results of the 2016 presidential elections and terrorist threats in the United States and Europe. In order to have a contrastive and interesting analysis, I chose two right-wing newspapers: Le Figaro and The New York Post and two left-center-wing newspapers: Le Monde and The New York Times. I also decided to analyze this impact around three major events that occurred during different phases of the election process: The Brussels attacks, the Orlando shooting and the Nice attack. It is important to demonstrate this correlation because the growing terrorism problem has inevitably a considerable impact on politics and consequently, on our daily life. Charlie Hebdo, Paris, Bruxelles, Orlando, Nice, Berlin. En deux ans, le terrorisme a coûté la vie à 280 citoyens européens et en a blessé plus de 1100. Bien que le terrorisme ait toujours existé, le nombre d'attaques et de victimes a connu une augmentation accélérée depuis le début du 21e siècle. Ce mémoire, intitulé « Une analyse de deux journaux américains et français sur les menaces terroristes et leur impact sur les élections présidentielles de 2016 aux États-Unis » a été rédigé dans le but d'éclaircir la corrélation entre les résultats des élections présidentielles de 2016 et les menaces terroristes aux États-Unis et en Europe. Afin d'obtenir une analyse contrastive intéressante, j'ai choisi deux journaux de droite : Le Figaro et The New York Post et deux journaux de centre-gauche : Le Monde et The New York Times. J'ai également décidé d'analyser cet impact autour de trois événements majeurs survenus au cours de différentes phases du processus électoral : les attentats de Bruxelles, la fusillade d'Orlando et l'attentat de Nice. Il est important de démontrer cette relation car le problème croissant du terrorisme a inévitablement une retombée considérable sur la politique et par conséquent, sur notre vie quotidienne.
