Abstract
This Master’s thesis analyses De Spaanse hoer, written by Hugo Claus in 1970, a scenic adaptation based on Fernando de Rojas’s novel La Celestina (1499-1502). This spanish piece has know numerous translations and adaptations. Claus, a effective artist, used to work on adaptations and translations, worked namely on La Celestina, which so far, has barely been analysed or studied. Two research questions are handled in this work. The first question is about te search of which “intermediate translation” Claus used to achieve his text. Knowing that he did not speak Spanish, he probably read a translation of La Celestina. To answer this question, this Master’s thesis uses Paul Claes’ method (consisting in a three steps process, focused on a comparison of six texts) and Dirk van Hulle’s approach (based on the study of the ‘avant-texte’). This analyses resulted in the conclusion that Claus probably used the English translation of J.M. Cohen and Phyllis Hartnol. The second research question examines the reason why Hugo Claus decided to adapt La Celestina. For this purpose, this work includes a content focused analysis, based on a juxtaposition between the Spanish book La Celestina, and Hugo Claus’ flemish play. This investigation concludes that Claus probably created De Spaanse hoer in order to criticise the ruling power and the Church. By keeping the time period, the space and the main themes, Hugo Claus transformed Fernando de Rojas’ novel into a parody.
