Abstract
This thesis aims to study the daily life and the economic situation of the Benedictine abbey of la Paix Notre-Dame in Liege in the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth century, by mobilising unedited sources preserved in their archives. This community is the renewal of an older one abolished during the French occupation. It built itself around the project of a boarding school aiming to give young women a high-quality instruction and a Christian education. This boarding school is the main source of revenue for the community, more than the nuns’ dowries, but also one of their main spending venues. The Benedictine nuns also established a free primary school for poor girls thanks to a subsidy from the Belgian state, but in practice it was funded mainly by the benefits from the boarding school.
