- Abstract
- This thesis examines how Protection, Automation, and Control Systems (PACS) in high‑voltage substations can be digitalized and progressively virtualized toward a centralized, software‑defined infrastructure. Building on the IEC 61850 ecosystem, it compares architectural options, from conventional and process‑bus digital substations to shared compute platforms hosting virtualized protection functions, across multi‑vendor environments. The methodology combines a structured review of standards and vendor solutions with analysis of European TSO initiatives, and distills requirements from time‑critical applications such as distance and differential protection.
