Abstract
This text examines the issue of the cloud industry’s accountability in relation to the environment, society and the economy. It highlights the concept of the ‘Nexus’ to emphasise the crucial interdependence between these three pillars. Technological solutions, such as green scheduling, predictive maintenance and modular design, are proposed to maximise energy efficiency and extend the lifespan of equipment. On the social and legal front, European regulations (GDPR, Data Act) are being put in place to counter extraterritorial laws and protect European digital sovereignty. Finally, the example of Infomaniak, an independent Swiss hosting provider, shows that a local player can perform as well as, or even better than, the hyperscalers in terms of CSR, whilst remaining profitable. The company stands out for its use of 100% renewable energy, the full recovery of waste heat from its D4 data centre, and the absence of transfer fees. It does, however, rely on foreign suppliers for components.
