Abstract
Oral anticoagulants drugs are essential in the treatment of cardiovascular dis-eases with thromboembolic risks. In Belgium, 120.000 patients are currently treat-ed with a vitamin K antagonist or a direct oral anticoagulant and this is likely to keep rising in the next few years due to population ageing. Although there is no doubt about their utility, the benefits they offer must always be balanced against the risks associated with their use due to their narrow therapeutic range. With the aim of reducing these risks and the related costs, some countries have implemented programs of pharmacist-led oral anticoagulation management, phar-maceutical interviews about oral anticoagulants, for the past few years. This master’s thesis focuses on existing projects and the resulting benefits for patients and pharmacists, while presenting the limits as well as the improvements that could be made. It also is an opportunity to picture the prospect of such an intervention on the Belgian pharmacy practice, by being part of a perspective of its expansion, already launched for a few years by the BUM.
