Abstract

enThis dissertation will approach the theme of one-man bands in black metal. It will try to define the characteristics and particularity of the practice. The first part will be devoted to the practice of the one-man band in general, it will be first defined with the help of scientific literature and popular literature: fanzines, newspapers and multimedia productions. The western history of the practice will then be detailed. The second part will be devoted to black metal in general. It will be defined, characterized and the history of the style will be traced according to a classification of black metal fans: the first, second and third waves. The last part will focus on the men behind some black metal one-man bands: Burzum, Striborg, Leviathan, Xasthur, Déhà and Unreqvited. With the help of interviews available on the web and/or interviews with them, I will look for the characteristics and common points of the one-man bands evolving in the black metal scene.
