Abstract
Wood is a widely used material in the construction of structures, particularly subfloor framing structures. Due to their role in supporting the floor, the design of these subfloor structures is a crucial element in the conception of any building. Despite their importance, professionals often reduce their calculation and verification to a single or a limited number of design options, missing the opportunity for the optimal solution. Calculation software currently available typically only allows the verification of a design option. This master’s thesis includes a research component, intended to analyze a subfloor structure from a theoretical perspective, its required configuration and sizing to minimize wood volume. In order to do so, a dimensionless reformulation of the Eurocode 5 design criteria is established, based on a publication of Descamps, Monhonval, and Latteur (2018). This reformulation gathers the different design criteria into a single criterion, allowing for the development of a dimensionless indicator for the volume of wood used in subfloor structures and leading to the establishment of general laws applicable for all flooring problems. This research about the optimization of wood volume used for a subfloor structure is further pursued with the development of a cross-platform application for smartphones and tablets. The app development is based on the dimensionless reformulation of the abovementioned criteria and aims at improving the realization of such structures. The application allows to immediately obtain the configuration of the subfloor structure that, on the one hand, minimizes the volume of wood to be used and, on the other hand, provides the lowest cost configuration for such structure.
