- Abstract
- Honey is a natural substance known since Antiquity. It has now shown therapeutic effects such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant as well as a debridement action. Nowadays, many studies are underway to estimate its efficiency in the healing process of acute and chronic wounds. Cicatrization is a quite complex process affected by many factors such as age, wound irrigation, alcohol consumption, ... Despite the lack of strong evidences, many medical devices are available to treat various types of injuries such as burns, diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers or surgical and traumatic wounds, etc. However, the use of honey as a treatment remains limited up until now, it is only used in last resort for a few cases. Furthermore, there is a lack of clinical evidences about its efficiency compared to conventional treatments.
