- Abstract
- In June 2016, the UK decided in a referendum to leave the European Union. This withdrawal raises many questions and could lead to the return of a hard border on the Island of Ireland. This paper looks at the consequences Brexit could have on Northern Ireland and the peace process set in place by the Good Friday Agreement (1998). The backstop solution to the Irish border with Northern Ireland remaining in the single market and the customs union has failed to content all parties. The Withdrawal Agreement between the EU and the UK has already been rejected three times by UK Parliament. It is now time to look for an alternative solution suiting all actors. Predicting the outcome of the negotiations is impossible at this stage but it’s clear that Brexit will have a huge impact on the island of Ireland. This paper refers to events occurred until 25 July 2019.
