Abstract
We develop and validate a coupling method between a Vortex Particle-Mesh (VPM) method and a Near-Wall (NW) solver based on a body-fitted mesh for the simulation of external and incompressible flows in three dimensions. As a direct extension of the work of P. Billuart et al. and Y. Marchal in 2D, and G. Querinjean in 3D, the coupling method is extended to moving rigid bodies in 3D. The methodology is based on an explicit scheme that imposes the continuity of the vorticity and the conservation its flux through the interface between the two solvers. The methodological aspects of the moving coupling approach are tackled and the scheme is validated against analytical and numerical test cases, including the Taylor-Green vortex and the flow past a rotating cylinder. The convergence and the proper functioning of the method are demonstrated. Finally, the method is applied to the simulation of three dimensional flows past an in-place rotating ellipsoid at Re = 500 in open and periodic boundary conditions, and at Re = 1000 in periodic boundary conditions. The last application is the simulation of the flow past an oscillatory pitching wing at Re = 500 for two different oscillation frequencies, where the aerodynamic forces and moments are evaluated.
