- Abstract
- The present MA dissertation focuses on the acquisition of grammatical gender in Dutch by French-speaking learners. On the basis of a corpus analysis of the LeerderCorpus Nederlands (LCN) and an elicitation task, the paper explores what types of mistakes French-speaking learners of Dutch make regarding the agreement of determiners, pronouns and adjectives and further aims at finding out why they make these mistakes. Results show that the French-speaking learners do not have a good command of grammatical gender yet. As hypothesized, these errors are due in some cases to gaps in the learners’ lexical knowledge and in other cases to weaknesses in their grammatical knowledge. This suggests, therefore, that there is no automaticity. Although learners have learned the grammatical rules at school and should know them in principle, they do not apply them systematically and consequently, make mistakes.
