- This master’s thesis presents a numerical study of flow uniformity and recirculation in alkaline water electrolysis cells using foam-like electrodes. The research employs Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to evaluate and optimise electrolyte flow behaviour within both prototype and industrial cell geometries. Various foam configurations, including bi-layer and graded structures, are analysed to understand their impact on lateral velocity, flow distribution, and bubble removal. Results highlight the importance of foam structure and cell design in enhancing mass transport and overall cell efficiency. The findings contribute to the ongoing development of more efficient and scalable green hydrogen production systems.
