Abstract
This thesis presents a state-of-the-art review of the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities (CBDR) in international environmental law. After tracing its origins through the major normative milestones, from Stockholm (1972) to the Paris Agreement (2015), it examines its theoretical dimension by analyzing its scope of application and normative reach. It then analyses the concrete influence of the principle, both in the development of international standards and in recent decisions by international courts. By offering an analysis of the field of CBDR, this work also highlights the shortcomings and controversies relating to its components.
