Abstract
“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action,
and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. […] It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate YOU. Keep the channel open.” (de Mille, 1992). In the biography of Martha Graham, who often referred to as the "Picasso of Dance," Agnes de Mille recounts this conversation in which Graham urges us to give our truest expression so that the world around us may benefit from it. What Graham names a "life force" and an "urge that motivates you" is what the psychological literature sometimes calls purpose: a stable and deeply personal sense of direction that gives meaning to action. Entrepreneurship is a vehicle for self-expression, identity construction and a meaningful contributor to individual well-being (Seibert et al., 2021, Powell & Baker, 2014). Since purpose is also known to shape personal projects (Little, 2006 as cited in Bronk, 2014), entrepreneurship and purpose might be expected to be closely related.
