Abstract
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are very commonly prescribed drugs due to their effectiveness in treating conditions related to gastric acidity. However, their use often exceeds approved indications, leading to frequent, often prolonged and insufficiently reassessed overuse. This situation constitutes a major public health concern. After a general overview of PPIs, the extent of their overprescription is described using global and Belgian data. The factors contributing to this misuse are also discussed. Particular attention is then given to the risks associated with prolonged use of these drugs, including micronutrient deficiencies, renal, bone, and infectious complications, as well as other potential adverse effects for which the level of evidence varies. In light of this, this work explores strategies to reduce inappropriate use and the associated risks. Deprescribing – its principles, indications, and methods – is presented as an essential approach, with a particular focus on the pharmacist’s role in this process. Medicinal and non-medicinal alternatives are also discussed to provide individualized, effective and sustainable patient care.
