Abstract
According to the World Health Organization, around 180.000 people die due to severe burn injuries each year. In case of survival, physical as well as psychological consequences become one of the main causes of morbidity for patients. Nowadays, conventional treatments such as skin grafts are effective but come with numerous inconveniences : lack of skin donations, the use of the patient’s own skin coming with psychological and physical sequelae, unaesthetically-pleasing results,… Thence, many laboratories and researchers around the world are looking to develop viable skin substitutes capable of functioning like the original tissue, and this produced by tissue engineering. This master thesis aims to highlight the relevance of implementing tissue engineering and biomaterials in the treatment of second- and third-degree burns. To this end, the work will first review the anatomical and histological organization of the skin, along with its physiological functions. Next, the most studied biomaterials in this context will be discussed. Then, the various bioprinting techniques will be explored as well as the current status of this technology. The final section will outline the reasons why this technology is not yet used in practice.
