- Abstract
- This study investigates the intersection between emotional intelligence (EI) and transformational leadership (TFL) behaviours in the hybrid work environment. While EI and TFL were have received considerable attention individually, their integration in the current evolving hybrid workplaces receives less attention. With the use of Goleman's Emotional Competence Framework and Bass and Avolio's four "I"s of transformational leadership, the present study presents how specific emotional competences influence key TFL behaviour such as idealised influence, inspirational motivation, and individualised consideration. A qualitative design was utilised, including ten semi-structured interviews with leaders and their subordinates, who were all employed in a hybrid work context. The outcome identifies subtle yet meaningful correlations between EI components and TFL behaviours. The study also highlights how hybrid work mediates the expression of emotionally intelligent leadership, and how face-to-face communication supports some of these competencies like empathy and relationship building. Overall, the study confirms that emotional intelligence plays a critical role in enabling transformational leadership to be effective, especially when adapted for the unique issues of hybrid work. The thesis concludes with practical implications for leadership development.
