Abstract
The cost of university books ranks as the third highest expense for Belgian students, following housing and food (Hauschildt, 2021). Opting for second-hand purchases can significantly reduce this burden for students. However, the challenge lies in the absence of a convenient and economically attractive solution that facilitates the buying and selling of second-hand university books. Caerus seeks to tackle this issue by offering a user-friendly platform specifically designed for Belgian students. Launched in April 2021, Caerus already boasts a thousand registered students and more than 800 books sold through the platform. The present thesis aims to evaluate the desirability, feasibility, and economic viability of the platform. The first part of the thesis defines the main theoretical concepts and analyses the relevant markets, including Belgium's economy, the book sector (with a specific focus on university books), and the challenges faced by c2c platforms. The second part elaborates on the feasibility study of the brief, starting with the project's presentation and its current situation, followed by a microeconomic analysis using the Porter's five forces. To assess the appeal of Caerus, we undertook a comprehensive research approach. Initially, we conducted a qualitative study involving 8 users to gather insights and feedback. This qualitative analysis provided valuable input for the subsequent development of a quantitative survey. Then, we administered this survey to a sample of 138 respondents and carefully analysed the obtained data. Following the research and data analysis, we will proceed to assess and compare two economic scenarios. This evaluation will enable us to determine the most suitable financial plan for the future of Caerus. By considering different potential outcomes and their corresponding financial implications, we aim to develop a robust and effective financial strategy that aligns with Caerus' objectives. This process will involve careful analysis, forecasting, and risk assessment to ensure the sustainability and success of Caerus in the long term.
