Abstract

enThis thesis analyses the role of foreign languages in contemporary Italian rap.The study traces the evolution of rap in Italy, from the American model to an independent and multilingual scene. The analysis is based on a corpus of nine artists representative of the contemporary scene. The most prevalent languages are English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Neapolitan. English, French and Spanish reflect cultural globalisation and the codes of international rap. English maintains a strong link with the legacy of American rap.French, on the other hand, plays an important role among post-migrant artists from the Maghreb. Arabic and Neapolitan primarily serve an identity-forming and cultural function.Featuring collaborations represent prime spaces for the expression of linguistic hybridisation.The research shows that multilingualism in Italian rap is both an aesthetic choice and a tool for identity construction.
