- Abstract
- Learning a foreign language can be a difficult and tedious task. Given the learning situation and the unpopularity of the Dutch language in Wallonia, the task seems even more complicated for pupils who are learning Dutch as a foreign language (NVT) in schools of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (FWB). Throughout the history of foreign language education, teachers have been looking for teaching tools to make language learning more interesting, motivating and effective. One of the tools that has given rise to a great deal of research is music. However, little research has been conducted on teachers’ attitudes and their specific use of music in the classroom. The present study aims to investigate the attitudes and practices of NVT teachers in the upper secondary education of the FWB regarding the use of music in the classroom. This research also aims to compare the attitudes and practices of NVT teachers with those of teachers of Dutch as a foreign language (NT2). For this purpose, an online survey was conducted among 55 NVT teachers. The results of the survey were analysed using both quantitative and qualitative methods, and were then compared with the findings of De Picker (2022) on NT2 teachers in adult education centres in Flanders. The comparison shows that, although the attitudes of both groups are similar, there is a significant difference in their use of music.
