Abstract
Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition characterized by recurrent eczematous lesions and intense itching. It is defined by an alteration of the function of the epidermal barrier function, skin inflammation and dysbiosis of the skin microbiota. The etiology of this disease is multifactorial affecting genetics, the environment and the diversity of the microbiota. Currently, there is no cure, but a growing number of innovative and targeted therapies show promise for combating the disease, including in patients with recalcitrant disease. Skin microorganisms play a role in the normal functioning of the immune system and prevent the colonization of pathogens via the proper functioning of the skin's barrier role. We summarize and discuss advancements in our understanding of the disease and their implications for prevention, management, and future research.
