Abstract
In order to answer the question "Are there differences in communication and language use between the French- and Dutch-language written press on digital media in Belgium?", the state of the art first presents the most popular digital media in Belgium and then retains only those with journalistic content. These media are the following: Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Then, the most popular Belgian French and Dutch newspapers are presented: SudInfo, 7sur7, Het Laatste Nieuws and Het Nieuwsblad. Other, less popular newspapers are also mentioned. The second and third chapters highlight the different peculiarities of digital journalistic communication, by presenting the peculiarities of the above-mentioned social networks, and finally, linguistic peculiarities in relation to digital journalism such as the presence of language errors, punctuation, word choice, sentence length, tenses and grammar for instance, are explained. With regard to the study of the comprehension of journalistic texts on digital media and their concrete aspect, first analyses are presented thanks to the formulas of Flesch. All of these elements were then used to conduct analyses of articles from professional media websites and articles from the three mentioned social networks in the second part of the thesis in order to verify whether or not the theoretical elements seen corresponded to the practical aspect as well as to observe general trends in the Belgian French and Dutch speaking digital press. This led to the general conclusion that the Dutch-speaking Belgian press tends to better manage and follow the theoretical elements seen in terms of communication and language use, even though the French-speaking press also has its strong points. The themes of the articles analysed were related to the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the introduction of the GDPR in Belgium.
