Abstract
Farm management software can generally be classified into two categories. The first (Geofolia, Smag, ISAGRI) is designed to manage regulatory compliance and is therefore built around the official parcel defined in the Common Agricultural Policy declaration. The second (Agrivi, Farmbrite, Agworld) is focused on yield optimisation and financial management. Both share a common assumption: that the field is the fundamental unit and remains fixed throughout the season. This assumption does not hold on an experimental farm. At the Louvain-la-Neuve exper- imental farm, operated by UCLouvain, a single official parcel can be subdivided into smaller, often short-lived, zones, each carrying its own treatments and a multi-year history. No existing tool supports this workflow adequately. This thesis presents EFMS (Experimental Farming Management System), an open-source web application designed to address this gap. EFMS supports recursive parcels at any depth, attaches operations to every level of the hierarchy, allows the user to query the history by attribute and by area, and shares specific parcels with external researchers without exposing the remainder of the farm. The backend is a Spring Boot service on top of PostgreSQL with the PostGIS extension. It performs shapefile import via GeoTools and uses JWT-based authentication. The frontend is a server-rendered React application (React Router 7) using Leaflet. Its interactive overlap-fix combines a bounding-box pre-filter, a layered overlap test and a polygon-difference computation based on the Martinez–Rueda algorithm. The application was developed in collaboration with the farm staff over one aca- demic year. It was validated through regular meetings with end-users and through a load-test campaign conducted on the class of low-power, single-board hardware on which it is likely to be deployed, at a request rate well above its expected usage. The result is a functional and readily deployable system. The remainder of this report presents the design, the algorithms, the validation rounds, the test results and the current limitations of the application.
